Wise Canada: How Fees, Exchange Rates and International Transfers Work
Sending money abroad from Canada? The amount, destination, funding method and exchange rate affect the cost. Compare the total Canadian dollars paid and the amount the recipient receives—not the advertised transfer fee alone.

How Wise transfers work in Canada
Wise is one option for sending money internationally. A sender chooses a sending amount and destination currency, enters the recipient details, selects an available payment method, and reviews the exchange rate, fees, estimated arrival and recipient amount before proceeding. Available routes and funding methods vary.
The recipient may be able to receive a supported transfer into a bank account without opening a Wise account. Confirm the specific route and recipient requirements before sending. Source: Wise Canada — sending money.
What is the mid-market exchange rate?
The mid-market rate is a reference rate between currencies. Wise describes using that rate for eligible conversions while showing its transfer or conversion fee separately. A mid-market rate does not make the transaction free.
Some providers may charge a lower stated fee while offering a less favourable exchange rate. Because quoted rates change, use same-time live quotes to compare the amount the recipient receives. Sources: Wise Canada pricing and sending-money pricing.
How much does Wise charge in Canada?
There is no universal Wise transfer fee for Canadian users. Pricing can vary with the amount, destination currency, payment method, and route. Some routes or SWIFT payments may involve additional intermediary charges. Any rate guarantees may be conditional and time-limited.
Do not use an undated headline starting percentage as the cost of a particular transfer. Consult the relevant live quote and all charges. Sources: Wise transfer-fee guidance and SWIFT transfer information.
Compare the final recipient amount, not just the fee
The following is a hypothetical CAD-to-USD comparison. Neither provider represents a current Wise or bank quote. Both examples assume an explicit fee is deducted from the same C$1,000 total outlay before conversion.
On smaller screens, scroll the comparison table horizontally to see all columns.
| Assumption | Provider A | Provider B |
|---|---|---|
| Total CAD paid | C$1,000 | C$1,000 |
| Explicit fee | C$8 | C$5 |
| Rate (USD per CAD) | 0.7200 | 0.7000 |
| Illustrative recipient amount | US$714.24 | US$696.50 |
Provider A: (C$1,000 − C$8) × 0.7200 = US$714.24. Provider B: (C$1,000 − C$5) × 0.7000 = US$696.50.
Under these simplified assumptions, the provider with the higher explicit fee delivers more. Real payment or receiving fees may be calculated differently; the provider's actual quote and terms take precedence.
How to compare live transfer quotes
- Choose the same total CAD outlay, destination currency, and recipient route for both providers.
- Identify available funding methods and any additional card or bank-transfer fees.
- Record the quoted rate, itemized charges, final recipient amount, and estimated arrival time.
- Compare quotes taken close together, and check for receiving or intermediary-bank charges.
- Check delivery restrictions, recipient details, support and cancellation conditions before deciding.
These steps help readers compare options; they are not a recommendation to use any particular provider.

Advantages, limitations and Canadian safeguards
A separately displayed fee and exchange-rate quote can make transfers easier to compare. But pricing, available corridors, funding methods, delivery estimates and intermediary charges differ by transaction. Wise is not a Canadian bank.
Wise says it safeguards applicable customer funds separately from its operating money, including while it temporarily holds funds for a transfer. This safeguarding is designed to protect customer funds if Wise becomes insolvent, but safeguarding is not CDIC deposit insurance. For eligible deposits in a Wise chequing account, Wise says the deposits are held in trust at a CDIC-member institution, with the customer named as a beneficiary. If that member institution—not Wise—fails, eligible deposits may qualify for CDIC protection of up to C$100,000 per beneficiary, subject to trust-disclosure requirements and applicable limits. CDIC aggregates deposits placed by the same trustee for the same beneficiary at the same member institution when applying that limit. Wise itself is not a CDIC-member institution; do not assume that every Wise product, balance or in-transit transfer has CDIC protection. Frequently asked questions
Is Wise available in Canada?
Wise publishes Canadian transfer information, although availability of specific routes, funding methods and products depends on current eligibility.
Does the mid-market rate mean there is no fee?
No. Wise describes a separately disclosed fee on eligible transfers or conversions.
How much would a C$1,000 transfer cost?
There is no single accurate fee without the destination, funding method and current quote. Compare the total amount paid and amount received.
Does the recipient need a Wise account?
Not for every eligible route. Some transfers may be delivered to the recipient's bank account; check the specific transfer conditions.
Is Wise always cheaper than a Canadian bank?
No universal conclusion is supported. Compare final recipient amounts, fees, delivery times and practical requirements using current quotes.
